ATB-117 — Terminology guidance: Formation Services
Status: Current · Effective: This cycle · Distribution: All colleagues
Summary
Updates preferred terminology for programmes, campuses, and participants across Formation Services. Supersedes the terminology annex of ATB-102.
Colleagues are reminded that terminology is reviewed each cycle as our understanding of the work matures. Earlier terms remain accurate but incomplete. Completeness is a courtesy we owe the work.
Documents produced in earlier cycles do not require retrospective revision. Where an earlier document is reissued for any other reason, terminology should be brought current at that time.
Questions of application should be raised through the Terminology Exception Request process rather than resolved locally. Local variation, however well intended, divides the language of the institution.
Preferred terminology
| Retired form | Preferred form | Note |
|---|---|---|
| orphan care facilities | residential formation campuses | The retired term described the participants; the preferred term describes the undertaking. |
| the orphans | programme participants | Participation is the relevant fact. Circumstance is not a category of person. |
| chores | structured contribution periods | Contribution is developmental. The retired term understated this. |
Revision history
| Revision | Effective | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Rev. 3 (current) | This cycle | Preferred terminology adopted as above; retired terms withdrawn from general internal and all external use. |
| Rev. 2 | Four cycles ago | "Youth workforce formation" adopted for programme descriptions in colleague-facing material. |
| Rev. 1 | Original issue | Baseline terminology annex issued with ATB-102. |
