DOC-D011 — Doctrine 11 — On Noticing

Executive Formation Series · extract Confidential

Record

  1. The institution sees everything, and is therefore never surprised. A colleague who is surprised has confused their own vision with the institution’s.
  2. To notice is natural. To mention is a choice. Doctrine concerns itself with the choice.
  3. A concern raised through the proper channel strengthens the institution. A concern raised elsewhere strengthens something else, and the institution does not maintain a list of the things it strengthens.
  4. Colleagues who ask the wrong question have, in almost every case, answered a different one.
  5. The sea does not notice the shore, and yet the shore is maintained. Colleagues are invited to sit with this for as long as proves necessary.

Adopted by the Committee on Doctrine. Recitation is not required. Recitation is noticed.
